Does Vanderbilt have an iGEM team?
Are there any computational roles in iGEM?
Is VTs software before its time? We can't efficiently design a protein as it is right now right?

    0. Knew: The field of synthetic biology incorporates a number of fields and is oriented around harnessing the power of biology for useful means.
    1. Learned: iGEM is a worldwide competition by which undergraduates (and now many more people) can try their hand at basic bio engineering.
    2. Pressing: Does bioterrorism in reference in to iGEM seem a bit misplaced? Since the competition provides them with a set of pre-determined plasmids, promoters, etc isn't the organization itself able to preclude the possibility of misuse? How likely is misuse with this demographic anyways?
    3. Presentation: How co-evolution and synthetic biology are linked
    4. Thoughts: I too am curious of whether Vanderbilt has a iGEM team. This is definitely something I'd be interest in.

Questions: What does the “kit of biological parts” consist of? Is iGEM only interested in microbiology genetic manipulation, and does ethical issues have a role to play in genetic engineering of higher organisms? Compared to traditional sensors, how reliable are biosensors like arsenic biodetector circuit built in E Coli bacteria?

Knew: the synthetic biology is an important but dangerous. Like a 3D printer can print out a gun, synthetic biology can synthesize weaponized toxins. Biotechnology

Learned: About iGEM and its goals

Pressing: Is it only undergrad? what does a biological tool kit include?

    Assignment 7A: iGEM

    0. Knew: The field of synthetic biology has potential applications to bioterrorism, but the international community has come to an agreement that this is not an area anyone should pursue.

    1. Learned: iGEM is an organization which sponsors a competition in which undergraduate students design and build a biological system.

    2. Pressing ?: Have any of the example projects listed been commercialized? What exactly is the dual use agreement?

    3. Presentation: links between synthetic biology research and bioterrorism

    4. Thoughts: This seems like a really interesting project which I wish I could have gotten involved with in undergrad.

Questions: Aren't teams limited when their only resource to build a biological system is from the kit? What does the kit consist of? What does it mean to build a biological system?

    0. Knew - about bioterrorism

    1. Learned - what iGEM is and its goals

    2. Pressing - what is included in the tool kit? If the GenoThreat software uses a list of agents given by the CDC, how can its use protect us from new agents?

    0. Knew: Bio-terrorism is a thing and lots of groups want to prevent it as well as advance the field of synthetic biology.

    1. Learned: What iGEM stands for and a few of the projects that it sponsors.

    2. Pressing ?: Does Vandy have a project sponsored by iGEM, where does the money come from?

    3. Presentation: Background of iGEM and some of the projects it funds.

    4. Thoughts: Neat project and a cool way to inspire undergrads.

    Assignment 7A

    0. Knew: Synthetic biology and it's potentials in benefiting as well as harming mankind.

    1. Learned: iGEM

    2. Pressing ?: What is included in the kit given to the teams? Are any of the devices designed in iGEM currently being manufactured/used in clinical/research settings?

    3. Presentation: A more in depth view of the field of synthetic biology.

    4. Thoughts: What are the prizes for winning the competition? Aside from the obvious resume booster, does your design get forwarded to biomedical companies and manufacturers?

    0. Knew: about the threat that bioterrorism can pose.

    1. Learned: about the iGEM initiative and various interesting projects and accomplishments that have come out of it, including software that monitors DNA sequences to see if it could be a potential biological threat or not.

    2. Pressing ?: Does Vanderbilt have an iGEM team? What are other accomplishments that have come out of this program?

    3. Presentation: Strategies in counteracting and preempting biological warfare.

    4. Thoughts: this seems like a very interesting program, I would like to know more about discoveries that have come out of it.
