Read Article  4: Wikipedia article on Allometry. Try to gain an understanding of the concept of scaling laws.

    0. Knew: Surface area to volume relationship.

    1. Learned: Basics of allometric scaling and various zoological examples.

    2. Pressing?: Scaling depends on the environment. For example, aquatic life take advantage of buoyancy. Since on-chip environments may differ from physiological environments, normal scaling laws may also be different.

    3. Presentation: Scaling in other areas.

    4. Thoughts: Until now I had never really appreciated the effects size has on many aspects of organisms.

    0 Knew: Surface area to volume ratio
    1 Learned: What scaling was and how many body processes are related to scaling.
    2 Pressing ?: Has evolution optimized our allometric relationships or are there more optimal configurations.
    3 Presentation: Gait patterns in different animals and how it relates to scaling.
    4 Thoughts: Never really though about scaling and how fluid transport and other processes are related to body size.

    0. Knew: What allometry was.

    1. Learned: That allometry is applied to much more than static biological forms. Also I learned about the existence and history of of Kleiber's law.

    2. Pressing?: Is allometric scaling applicable on the cellular level?

    3. Presentation: Locomotive Allometry in Spiders.

    4. Thoughts: I never knew that allometric scaling was applied to dynamic situations (i.e. locomotion). Also, it is interesting to think of using allometric scaling to provide further insight into cellular structure and function.

    0. Knew: The definition of allometry.

    1. Learned: That allometry can be studied in the context of body size, metabolic rate, muscle characteristics, legged locomotion, and fluid locomotion. Allometric studies have revealed key relationships about legged locomotion.

    2. Pressing?: How are these scaling relations different or similar when making models of manufactured objects?

    3. Presentation: Evolutionary Allometry

    4. Thoughts: I think this Wikipedia article did a good job of introducing what we've learned from allometry and what areas need further studies. This article helped put the scaling argument for organ-on-a-chip in context.

    0. Knew: The basic definition of allometry.

    1. Learned: Kleiber's law

    2. Pressing?: Is the microenvironment of microdevices similar enough to the in vivo environment that you can use the same scaling laws? Obviously the scaling of different organs has been extensively studied but what about different cell types within those organs?

    3. Presentation: Scaling in Humans from Different Ethnic Groups

    4. Thoughts: I enjoyed the various examples provided in the article.
