The Systems Biology of COVID-19 and the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The class will build a foundation that includes the emergence of complexity, simple biological subsystems, their reductionist and equivalent toy and organ-chip models, and the measurements required to specify model architecture and parameters. Applications to biology, physiology, medicine, chemical and biological defense, pharmacology, drug discovery, and toxicology. UGrad: PHYS 240 01 and BME 290B; Grad: PHYS 326 and BME 395C.

0. Knew: Didn't know much about this one except that previous work on living systems on a chip had been done.
1. Learned: Requires four organs to communicate, with a primary focus on the liver, heart, and lung.
2. Pressing?: How far can these organ systems be reduced and still be acceptable by the proposal? Also, how are these three proposals related?
3. Presentation: Multiple cell types on chip.
4. Thoughts: I thought that this one was the most reasonable in terms of expectations.

0. Knew: I knew DTRA sent out a call similar to DARPA. I didn't know that they were two different solicitations and how they differed.
1. Learned: The primary focus for the DTRA proposal is the liver, heart, and lung. An additional construct will be either kidney, vasculature, or BBB w/ neuronal component. A "blood surrogate" is needed too.
2. Pressing?: What work has been done previously towards creating a universal culture medium?
3. Presentation: Current on-line analytic methods
4. Thoughts: This call made the others seem overly-ambitious.

1: Learned: you get to pick between BBB+neuronal or kidney or vasculature
2: Pressing? competition between being "user friendly" and complex enough to recapitulate the functions all of these calls are interested in

4: Thoughts: Seems like they want more control/involvement in the development of the platform

2. Pressing?: What is the overlap between engineering whole organs and organs on a chip?

1. Learned: That the BBB plays a major role in drug delivery.
2. Pressing?: Are the benefits of organ on a chip that much more desirable than just using animal models
3. Presentation: How accurate multiple organs on a chip are to the real model
4. Thoughts: I find it particularly interesting that DTRA is focusing on the BBB

1. Learned: I learned that they were looking for the development of a blood surrogate, preferably one that was commercially available.
2. Pressing?: What mediums are currently available that could work as a blood surrogate? What needs to be tweaked in the formulas to achieve this?
3. Presentation: Intricacies of the Blood Brain Barrier.
4. Thoughts: The call seemed to be the most realistic, yet the concept could eventually be extended to more systems.
